Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is tallow and why do you use it in your products?
Tallow is a nutrient-rich fat derived from grass-fed animals. It's incredibly nourishing for the skin, containing vitamins A, D, E, and K. We use tallow because it closely mimics our skin's natural oils, making it ideal for deep hydration and skin barrier support.
2. Are your products suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes! Our formulations are minimal and free from harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances. However, we always recommend conducting a patch test before full use.
3. How do I use tallow balm?
Tallow balm is a true multi-purpose skincare staple. You can use it anywhere on the body—face, hands, feet, lips, or anywhere in need of deep nourishment.
Our balms and sticks are made with 100% natural, toxin-free ingredients that are safe, gentle, and incredibly effective. Simply take a small amount, warm it between your fingers, and massage into clean skin. A little goes a long way!
Think of it as skin food—rich, wholesome, and packed with nutrients your skin will love.
4. Why does my tallow balm feel harder or softer sometimes?
Because tallow is a completely natural ingredient, its texture can change slightly with the seasons. In cooler temperatures, the balm may feel firmer, while in warmer weather it tends to soften and become more creamy.
If your balm feels a bit hard, simply warm a small amount between your fingers or palms—it will quickly melt into your skin and absorb as beautifully as always.
These natural shifts are perfectly normal and don’t affect the balm’s quality or effectiveness.
5. Is Howton Tallow cruelty-free?
Absolutely. None of our products are tested on animals, and we source all ingredients ethically and responsibly.
6. Can I use your products if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Most of our products are made with natural, gentle ingredients. However, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use, especially if you’re unsure about specific ingredients.
7. How should I store my products?
Keep your Howton Tallow products in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Because we use natural ingredients without preservatives, they’re best used within 6 months of opening.
8. Why does the texture of my balm feel different from my last order?
From time to time, you may notice slight variations in the texture of your tallow balm—even between products from the same batch. This is completely natural and simply reflects our commitment to using only pure, unrefined ingredients with no synthetic stabilisers or fillers.
Because tallow is a natural ingredient, factors like the time of year, the cattle’s diet, ambient temperatures during production, and even how the product is stored can all influence the final texture. You might notice the balm feels slightly grainy or firmer—similar to how raw honey can crystallise depending on conditions.
This graininess is often due to changes in temperature during storage or transit and does not affect the quality or performance of the balm. The small natural fat crystals will melt smoothly into your skin during use.
If you prefer a softer consistency, you can gently re-melt the balm using a warm water bath and pour it back into the tin to reset.
9. Will my tallow balm have a smell?
Our tallow is completely natural, unbleached, and undeodorised—meaning we keep it as close to nature as possible. Because of this, you may notice a mild, creamy scent that’s characteristic of high-quality tallow.
As with all natural products, there can be subtle variations from batch to batch. Factors such as the season, the cattle’s diet, and storage temperature can all influence the final scent and texture.
While our tallow has a low odour, it is still a form of rendered beef fat—so a gentle scent is to be expected. If you're sensitive to natural scents, you might enjoy one of our scented ranges, which offer a beautiful aroma without synthetic additives.
If you’ve chosen an unscented balm and find the natural scent isn’t quite to your liking, you can safely add a few drops of your favourite skin-safe essential oil—just be sure to patch test before applying.

Disclaimer
Our products are rooted in tradition—from the land, not the lab. While natural ingredients like tallow have been trusted for generations, we choose not to follow conventional commercial manufacturing processes often used in synthetic skincare.
Instead, we let our products speak for themselves.
If you have specific skin concerns—such as eczema or dryness —we’re happy to share the natural properties of our ingredients and how they may support overall skin and hair health. However, for medical conditions, we always recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional or GP before use.
Please note: our balms are made using tallow, a nutrient-rich fat derived from beef. Due to its natural origin, there may be a subtle scent. This is a normal characteristic of the ingredient, and as such, we do not offer refunds based on scent preferences.
If you have any futher questions , please don’t hesitate to reach out to our customer care team. We're happy to help.
