The Slow Art of Making Tallow Soap

There’s something about a proper bar of handmade soap that just feels different.

No plastic bottle. No long list of unnecessary ingredients. Just a solid bar, made slowly and simply, with ingredients chosen for a reason.

At Howton Tallow, our handmade tallow soaps are made in small batches using grass-fed beef tallow, natural oils and carefully selected essential oils. We currently have two natural scents to choose from: Lavender and Mint.

And, like everything we make, there’s no rushing the process.

Made slowly, made properly

Soap making is one of those things where taking your time matters.

Our bars are handmade in small batches rather than churned out by the hundreds. Each batch is carefully prepared, poured and left to go through the soap-making process naturally before being cut and finished by hand.

That slower process means every bar can be slightly different. You might notice small variations in colour, texture or appearance — and that's part of what makes handmade soap special.

It isn't supposed to look factory perfect.

It's supposed to look handmade.

Why tallow?

Tallow has been used in traditional soap making and skincare for generations, and it's at the heart of what we do at Howton Tallow.

Our tallow comes from grass-fed beef and is combined with natural oils to create a bar that produces a rich, creamy lather while gently cleansing the skin.

It's a simple approach to skincare: fewer unnecessary ingredients, traditional methods and ingredients that have stood the test of time.

Our Lavender soap contains natural lavender essential oil, while our Mint soap brings a fresher, more invigorating scent to your daily routine.

Lavender or Mint?

Lavender is the softer, more relaxing option — naturally scented with lavender essential oil and perfect when you want something a little more calming and traditional.

Mint is fresh, clean and uplifting, making it a great choice for mornings, after a swim or whenever you want that fresh, just-showered feeling.

Both are made using the same traditional, slow approach.

Made slowly, made properly

These aren't soaps that need saving for a special occasion.

Use them on your hands, body, in the shower or bath — they're designed to be everyday bars that you can actually use.

And because they're solid bars, there's no plastic bottle to throw away when you've finished.

One little tip: let your soap dry properly between uses. A good draining soap dish helps the bar last much longer and stops it sitting in a puddle of water. You can buy a dish here.

Simple things make a difference.
